Your dogs diet

Modern diets can cause or at least help along behavioural problems. For example, too much protein causes dogs to be hyperactive, leading to difficulties in training, the dog will be difficult to train, pacing, restless, jump up a lot, seem to have poor concentration and may mouth a lot (biting hands)

Can't, won't housetrain?

This can be diet related, complete foods contain large amounts of cereal that bulk out the stools, this cereal cannot be easily digested by your dog so passes out largely undigested, as you can guess, this means there is more to clean up, the average pup on complete needs up to four meals a day so you have a constant round of cleaning to do, it then becomes difficult to assess when your pup needs the toilet and get a good routine, by contrast pups fed naturally only need on average two meals a day, soon becoming one good feed a day by around 16 weeks, less mess to clean and easy to assess when they need to go out, combine this with the large amounts of water that is needed by the dog to expand the food in the bowel and you have a dog that needs to urinate more frequently adding to the nightmare.

Colouring, additives and preservatives.

Can cause hyperactivity and in some cases aggression.

High temperature cooking

All completes and canned feeds are cooked at high temperature to destroy harmful bacteria but the process leaves the food depleted in essential fatty acids (EFA's) these are turned to harmful saturated fats, the brain is made up of up to 60% EFA's if these are depleted then your dog will be working on what scientists call lizard level or constant fight or flight mode, symptoms of EFA depletion will be similar to too high a protein level with the added risk of aggression.

High temperature processing also damages delicate amino acids, one of which, L-Trytophan is responsible for your pet being able to stay calm.

Quite often a change of diet, apart from the obvious health benefits now being promoted by breeders and vets alike, can dramatically change the behaviour of your dog, in some cases training is no longer needed, in others the minimum amount re-training is required to get your pet back on track.
